Answering service for a small business: what it does, what it costs, and the middle path

By The NoBeep team at Duck & Shark. Facts and prices checked .

Short answer

An answering service picks up the calls you can't, takes a message or helps the caller, and tells you what happened. Human services start around $250 a month; AI services from about $25. If what you really need is for callers to stop hanging up at the beep, a voicemail that takes action, like NoBeep from $9 a month, may be enough.

What an answering service actually does

When you can't pick up, the call goes to someone (or something) else. A basic service takes a message and emails it to you. Better ones answer common questions, book appointments, and put urgent calls through to you. The difference between options is mostly who answers, what they're allowed to do, and how you pay: by the minute, by the call, or flat.

The real problem is usually the beep

Most small businesses don't miss calls because nobody could talk to the caller. They miss them because the caller heard a beep and hung up, or left half a message with no callback number. Picture a roofer on a ladder: the phone rings, it goes to voicemail, and the caller with the leaking ceiling calls the next roofer on the list.

A full answering service fixes that by putting a person on every call. That's great, and it costs $250 to $800 a month. A voicemail that takes action fixes the same moment for a lot less: the caller stays on, gets help, and the job comes to you instead of the next name on the list.

How NoBeep works as an answering service

  • During the call: it confirms the caller's name, number and what they need, answers questions from your own info, spots emergencies by your rules and, on NoWait, books the visit or rings urgent calls through to your cell.
  • After the call: you get a finished note with the recording, transcript and what's already done. Callers who hang up get a text back (NoWait). Every caller is saved with their details.
  • With your team: your phone still rings first. NoBeep takes the calls nobody gets to, and on NoGaps it sends each call to the right person or department, so your staff is only on the calls they should be on.

It's priced by calls, not minutes, and hang-ups under 15 seconds and spam don't count. NoBeep and NoWait come with a free 14-day trial.

How to choose

Pick a human answering service if

every caller must reach a live person, or each call needs judgment a script can't give (clinical triage, complex legal intake).

Pick an AI answering service if

you want an assistant that introduces itself as one and you're comfortable with callers knowing that from the first word.

Pick NoBeep if

you mostly need missed callers to stop disappearing, want your normal voicemail feel to stay, and want things done on the call (details confirmed, questions answered, visits booked) rather than just a message to listen to. See it by trade or read why owners pick it.

Hear it before you decide

Call the demo line and leave a message like a real customer, then see the note the owner gets. Or try NoBeep on your own number free for 14 days; you keep your number and can switch it off anytime.

Is NoBeep an answering service?

It does the job an answering service does for the calls you miss: it picks up, gets the details, helps the caller and takes action. It is not a room of live operators. Callers hear what sounds like your voicemail, then it helps them, and it tells the truth if someone asks whether it's a person.

Hear a real call
Will my staff still take calls?

Yes. Your phone rings first, so your team answers what they can. NoBeep only picks up the calls nobody gets to. On NoWait it rings urgent calls through to your cell, and on NoGaps it transfers callers to the right person or department, so your staff is only on the calls they should actually be on.

How routing works
Do I have to change my phone number?

No. You keep your number and connect NoBeep so it only picks up the calls you miss. You can switch it off anytime.

See how setup works
When is a human answering service the better choice?

When every caller must reach a live person, for example a medical practice with clinical triage or a firm whose intake needs judgment calls on every call. Human services such as Ruby or Smith.ai's human tier are built for that, and cost more because of it.
